When new clients come to our clinic, many ask “What is Athletic Therapy?” According to the Canadian Athletic Therapist’s Association, an Athletic Therapist is a health care profession that specializes in the prevention, assessment and care of musculoskeletal disorders (muscles, bones, joints) especially as they relate to athletics and the pursuit of physical activity.

If you are not an athlete, is this a good therapy choice for you? Although Athletic Therapists adhere to the Sports Medicine Model of care, they have a wide range of clients including children through to seniors and professional, recreational and non-athletes. They deal with all musculoskeletal injuries including acute, chronic and post-surgical; they are skilled in treating concussions and are excellent at exercise prescription and taping. The goal of an Athletic Therapist is to find the cause and treat the cause of the injury so that their client can get back to their regular activities (day to day as well as physical), as quickly as possible.

After an assessment, our therapists use a variety of techniques including some or all of: manual therapy, modalities, hydrotherapy, bracing and taping techniques, exercise prescription and education. You will often feel a difference after just one visit.

Certified Athletic Therapists can be recognized by the credential CAT(C).

We are happy that many extended health care benefit plans now cover Athletic Therapy treatments. Check to see if you are covered, and contact us to set up an appointment today.
